Overview

Analyze volume distribution with the Xcelerate Trade Volume Profile indicator for TradingView. Identify POC, VAH, VAL, HVN, and LVN levels across Session, Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and rolling N-day profiles to evaluate key price areas, volume concentrations, and market structure.

Price tells us where the market has moved. Volume Profile adds another perspective: where trading activity has been concentrated along the way.

The Volume Profile - POC, VAH, VAL Indicator by Xcelerate Trade provides a structured view of volume distribution across different trading periods.

It highlights important volume concentrations and established Value Area boundaries, giving you additional context for evaluating price behavior and market structure.

Rather than displaying volume only as bars beneath the chart, the indicator analyzes its distribution across price levels and calculates five important references:

  1. Point of Control (POC) - the highest-volume price row within the selected profile.

  2. Value Area High (VAH) - the upper boundary of the calculated Value Area.

  3. Value Area Low (VAL) - the lower boundary of the calculated Value Area.

  4. High Volume Nodes (HVN) - local areas of relatively high volume concentration.

  5. Low Volume Nodes (LVN) - local areas of comparatively low volume.

The indicator supports Session, Daily, Weekly, and Monthly profiles, alongside an optional rolling N-day composite for broader multi-day analysis.

Unlike a Fixed Range Volume Profile, which focuses on a selected historical range, this indicator automatically organizes its calculations around defined trading periods. This structure makes it possible to compare how volume distributions develop between sessions, days, weeks, and months.

By bringing these references together, the indicator provides a way to compare shorter-term price behavior with broader market activity without manually rebuilding the analysis for each period.

Developing and historical levels are displayed directly on the chart, allowing you to monitor the current distribution alongside completed periods.

Understanding POC, VAH, VAL, HVN, and LVN

Volume Profile divides the selected price range into rows and estimates how the available trading volume is distributed across those price levels, based on the chart's price and volume data.

The resulting profile highlights where trading activity has concentrated and where comparatively little activity has occurred.

Each calculated level provides a different perspective.

Point of Control (POC)

POC identifies the price row with the highest calculated volume during the selected period.

It represents the most prominent volume concentration within that profile and provides a useful reference when analyzing consolidation, price rotation, and changes in market structure.

For example, price may repeatedly trade around an established POC during a balanced session. During a directional move, price may leave that area and begin developing a new volume concentration elsewhere.

POC is not a guaranteed support or resistance level, nor does price have to return to it.

Its relevance depends on market conditions and subsequent price behavior.

Value Area High (VAH) and Value Area Low (VAL)

The Value Area contains a selected percentage of the profile's calculated volume.

By default, the indicator uses 70%, with the percentage adjustable between 50% and 95%.

VAH marks the upper boundary of this region, while VAL marks its lower boundary.

These levels establish reference boundaries for evaluating price behavior inside and outside the Value Area.

For example:

Price inside VAH-VAL is trading within the calculated Value Area.

Price above VAH has moved beyond its upper boundary.

Price below VAL has moved beyond its lower boundary.

A move outside the Value Area can be worth monitoring, particularly when it coincides with changes in market structure or momentum.

However, crossing VAH or VAL does not independently confirm a breakout or reversal. What matters is how price behaves after reaching or moving beyond those boundaries.

High Volume Nodes (HVN)

HVNs identify local peaks of relatively high volume compared with neighboring price rows.

These areas highlight local volume concentrations that may develop during consolidation, repeated trading activity, or periods of market balance.

When an HVN overlaps an important market structure level, it may provide additional context for that area.

It should not, however, be interpreted as a guaranteed reaction zone.

Low Volume Nodes (LVN)

LVNs identify local troughs where comparatively little volume was recorded.

They highlight thinner sections of the historical volume distribution.

Price may sometimes move more efficiently through these regions, but an LVN does not guarantee rapid movement or indicate the exact liquidity currently available in the order book.

Together, POC, VAH, VAL, HVN, and LVN provide a clearer view of the volume structure formed during the selected period.

Volume Profile calculations depend on the price and volume data available for the selected instrument. Exchange-traded markets may provide reported transaction volume, while some forex feeds use tick volume. As a result, calculated distributions can differ between instruments and data providers.

Session, Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Profiles

Different trading periods can produce very different volume distributions.

A level that appears significant within a single session may be less prominent when viewed across an entire week.

The indicator offers four primary profile modes.

Session Profile

Calculates Volume Profile levels for a configurable trading session.

This mode is particularly useful for intraday analysis, allowing you to monitor developing session levels and compare them with previous sessions.

Custom session times allow the analysis to be adapted to the market being traded.

Daily Profile

Calculates the volume distribution for each trading day.

Daily POC, VAH, VAL, HVN, and LVN levels provide references for evaluating current price action relative to previous daily distributions.

For example, the previous day's Value Area may provide a useful reference when studying the current day's price development.

Weekly Profile

Provides a broader view of volume concentration across the trading week.

Weekly levels place shorter-term price movements within a larger distribution and highlight areas that may not be apparent from a single session.

Monthly Profile

Calculates Volume Profile levels across the selected monthly period.

This mode provides a broader market perspective, allowing current price behavior to be compared with volume concentrations established over a longer period.

Different Periods, Different Perspectives

The purpose of switching between profiles is not to find a universally stronger level, but to select the volume context that best matches your trading strategy and timeframe.

Rolling N-Day Composite Volume Profile

In addition to the four standard profile modes, the indicator includes an optional rolling N-day composite.

This feature calculates POC, VAH, and VAL across a configurable number of recent calendar days, providing an additional perspective on the broader volume distribution.

For example, price may move above the current session's VAH while remaining inside the rolling composite Value Area.

This means that price has moved beyond the session's upper Value Area boundary but is still trading within the broader multi-day volume region.

The two observations are not contradictory. They describe different periods of market activity.

This makes it possible to compare short-term developments with the volume structure established over multiple days, without manually selecting a fixed historical range.

Historical Data Consideration

The rolling calculation is subject to an approximately 5,000-bar historical scan limitation. On very low timeframes, the available bars may not cover the entire requested N-day period, resulting in a shorter effective composite.

Developing and Historical Volume Profile Levels

The indicator distinguishes between the active profile and completed historical profiles.

During the current period, the developing profile updates on the latest chart bar as new price and volume information becomes available.

As the distribution evolves, POC, VAH, VAL, HVN, and LVN may change.

For example, a session POC may shift if a greater concentration of volume develops at another price level.

The indicator displays the calculated volume references directly on the chart, allowing the developing levels to be monitored as the current period progresses.

Once a period is completed, its calculated levels are retained as historical references. Unlike the developing profile, they no longer change as new bars are added to subsequent periods:

Developing Profile → Levels Can Change

Completed Profile → Historical Reference

The number of historical profiles displayed can also be controlled through the indicator's settings, helping maintain a readable chart.

Indicator Settings and Customization

The Volume Profile - POC, VAH, VAL Indicator provides several configuration options to adapt the analysis to different instruments, timeframes, and trading preferences.

Profile Period

Choose between Session, Daily, Weekly, and Monthly profiles.

Session mode also includes a configurable session time.

Profile Rows

Adjustable Range: 10-100 Rows

The row count determines how finely the selected price range is divided.

Lower values produce broader price intervals, while higher values reveal more detailed variations in the volume distribution.

Increasing the number of rows can provide additional detail, although it may also increase calculation requirements.

Value Area Percentage

Default: 70% | Adjustable: 50%-95%

This setting controls the percentage of total profile volume included in the Value Area.

Changing the percentage affects the calculated VAH and VAL boundaries.

HVN and LVN Detection

Configurable thresholds adjust the sensitivity of local high-volume and low-volume node identification.

This provides control over the amount of information displayed and helps maintain chart clarity.

Rolling Composite

Enable the rolling N-day composite and configure the number of calendar days included in the calculation.

Its POC, VAH, and VAL levels can be displayed alongside the primary period-based profile.

Chart Appearance

Available visual controls include:

  • Independent visibility of POC, VAH, VAL, HVN and LVN;

  • Level labels;

  • Extension of levels to the right;

  • Color customization;

  • Rolling composite level display;

  • Maximum number of historical profiles.

These options make it possible to keep the most relevant volume references visible without unnecessarily overcrowding the chart.

Choosing an Initial Configuration

The default 70% Value Area provides a conventional starting point for volume distribution analysis.

Lower row counts produce a broader representation of the profile, while higher row counts reveal more detailed variations between price levels.

Neither configuration is universally better. The appropriate settings depend on the instrument, timeframe, and amount of detail required for the analysis.

How to Use the Volume Profile Indicator

The indicator is designed to complement market analysis rather than replace a trading strategy.

A practical approach is to begin with market structure and liquidity, select the relevant profile period, and then evaluate how price behaves around the calculated volume levels.

Market Structure → Liquidity → Volume Profile Levels → Price Interaction → Trading Plan

For example, you may first identify an important Area of Interest and select a Session or Daily profile to evaluate the surrounding volume distribution.

You can then examine whether price is approaching POC, interacting with VAH or VAL, or moving through an HVN or LVN.

This establishes the volume context around the area before applying the conditions of your trading strategy.

A Practical Example

Suppose you are analyzing an intraday equity-index futures chart using the previous session's completed Volume Profile.

For this hypothetical example, the indicator has calculated:

VAH = 5,250

POC = 5,235

VAL = 5,220

During the next session, price moves above 5,250.

This means that price is now trading above the previous session's upper Value Area boundary.

However, the move alone does not confirm a valid bullish breakout.

The next step is to observe what happens.

If price moves above 5,250 but quickly returns inside the previous Value Area, this may suggest that the attempt to sustain trading above the established boundary was unsuccessful.

If price remains above 5,250 and the developing profile begins showing increased volume concentration at higher prices, this may indicate that trading activity is becoming established above the previous session's Value Area.

If price returns inside the previous Value Area, you can also monitor its subsequent behavior around POC at 5,235. A deeper move toward VAL at 5,220 would represent a different development within the previous session's distribution, not an automatic Short signal.

These movements can also be compared with the rolling composite.

For example, price may be above the previous session's VAH while remaining inside the broader multi-day Value Area.

This provides an additional perspective on whether the movement is significant only within the previous session or also relative to the wider volume structure.

Neither outcome guarantees continuation or reversal.

The indicator provides the calculated reference levels. Market structure, price behavior, and your trading strategy determine whether a valid Entry can be considered.

Adding Market Context

Volume Profile becomes more useful when combined with other elements of market analysis.

Relevant context may include:

  • Market Structure;

  • Liquidity;

  • Supply and Demand;

  • support and resistance;

  • Order Blocks;

  • Fair Value Gaps;

  • CHoCH, MSS, and BOS;

  • higher-timeframe direction;

  • session context;

  • scheduled economic events.

For example, an established HVN may overlap a previously identified Demand area or an important market structure level.

This overlap provides additional context, particularly when price behavior aligns with the broader market structure.

The relevance of a Volume Profile level can also change when price repeatedly crosses it without establishing a clear direction, when developing levels shift significantly, or when volatility increases around a major economic release.

These conditions require additional evaluation rather than an automatic interpretation of the level as support, resistance, or a trading signal.

Volume Profile identifies the calculated distribution, while market structure, liquidity, and price behavior must be evaluated separately.

These elements should be combined according to the rules of your trading strategy rather than treated as independent reasons to enter a trade.

Choosing the Timeframe

Volume Profile can be applied across different chart timeframes, but the level of detail and available historical coverage can change.

Lower chart timeframes provide more granular input data for the volume distribution, but they also increase the number of bars required to analyze longer periods. Higher chart timeframes use fewer, broader bars, which may reduce the precision of the estimated distribution across price levels.

The chart timeframe and the selected profile period are separate considerations.

For example, a Session Profile on a 1-minute chart analyzes a different period of trading activity from a Weekly Profile on the same chart.

For intraday analysis, Session or Daily profiles may be more relevant. For broader market analysis, Weekly, Monthly, or rolling composite levels can provide additional context.

The rolling composite's historical scan limitation should also be considered when using very low timeframes.

The appropriate combination depends on the instrument, trading approach, execution timeframe, and volume context being analyzed.

What the Indicator Does Not Tell Us

The Volume Profile - POC, VAH, VAL Indicator can help answer several important questions:

Where has the highest concentration of trading volume occurred during the selected period?

What are the current POC, VAH, and VAL levels?

Where are the High Volume Nodes and Low Volume Nodes?

Is price trading inside or outside the established Value Area?

How does the current volume distribution compare with previous sessions or broader periods?

What it does not tell us by itself is:

Should we enter a trade?

A POC does not guarantee that price will return to it or react when it is reached.

A move above VAH does not automatically confirm a bullish breakout.

A move below VAL does not automatically confirm a bearish continuation.

An HVN does not guarantee support or resistance, and an LVN does not guarantee rapid price movement.

These levels describe how available trading volume has been distributed across price during the selected period. A complete trading decision still requires market context, confirmation, execution criteria, and the Risk Management rules defined by your trading strategy.

Volume Profile Indicator and Strategy

The Volume Profile - POC, VAH, VAL Indicator provides a structured way to analyze volume distribution across different price levels and trading periods.

It identifies the Point of Control, Value Area boundaries, and High Volume and Low Volume Nodes, while supporting Session, Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and rolling N-day analysis.

Within a broader trading process, it helps answer a fundamental question:

Where has trading activity concentrated, and how is price behaving relative to those areas?

The indicator provides the volume distribution and reference levels, while a complete trading strategy determines how this information is combined with market structure, liquidity, execution, and Risk Management.
